Fic: The Made-Up Things
Title: The Made-Up Things
Summary:  Once upon a time, there were four children, whose names were Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy.  And then all that was left was Susan, who had two daughters.  One was named Petunia, and one was named Lily.
Fandom: HP/Narnia
Rating: PG
Disclaimer: C. S. Lewis, J. K. Rowling, and the rest own.  I don't.
Notes:  I blame Sam and Fluffy and Kate for this.  I thank Molly and Heather, who are wonderful and lovely.

Suppose we have only dreamed, or made up, all those things - trees and grass and sun and moon and stars. Suppose we have. Then all I can say is that, in any case, the made - up things seem a good deal more important then the real ones.

I love this so very very much. You win at life. It's sweet and poignent and it's the perfect crossover in that it's insane but it works. And has excellent characterization.

Oh, this is wonderful. Well deserving of those ninja cupcakes I promised you. Thank you for writing it! I love the interplay of Petunia and Lily, a real likeable Petunia, understandably estranged somewhat from Lily.

And I love Susan's grownup troubles. *hugs Susan*
the patron saint of sarcasm[info]fire_and_a_rose on April 1st, 2005 01:27 am (UTC)
Thank you. :)

Petunia reminds me a lot of older-Susan. Neither gets much love, and both of them are aware that another world entirely exists, but they can't touch it. It's really sad for both of them.

Amazing. I was so curious and so skeptical but it worked, and it worked well. Thank you, so much, for posting this.

It shouldn't, really, work I think. But it does.

Oh my - found this through [info]copperbadge's rec. Delightful. A crossover that really works, even though you'd think it couldn't possibly!

I'm glad you enjoyed it. :D I wasn't sure it would work at all, but I'm glad it did.

Thank you so much.

(I was flailing for a moment, actually. "People! People I do not know! Where have they come from?!" And then I saw Sam's post. "Oh. Makes sense now." :D)

LOVE. Absolutely no other words for it :)

(It was the 'not a tame lion' line that really hit me)
the patron saint of sarcasm[info]fire_and_a_rose on April 1st, 2005 02:20 am (UTC)
Oh, thank you. :D

And Lily WAS in Gryffindor. Lions are appropriate. :D

Taffy[info]metallumai on April 1st, 2005 02:15 am (UTC)
Lovely!! Of course, why didn't I think of this? Petunia and Lily as Susan's children makes perfect sense.

(Sam sent me.)
the patron saint of sarcasm[info]fire_and_a_rose on April 1st, 2005 02:34 am (UTC)
I'm not sure it fits perfectly with the timeline that the two books have set up, but Susan could have had them later in life. Otherwise, I think it works. :D I hope so, at least.

Thank you!

This is beautiful. It's a portrait of Petunia Evans as a human being, as a person who winds up being hurt, who winds up losing just about everything to a world she doesn't understand. I like the notion of the linkage between Narnia and the world of Harry Potter (and the explanation of what happened to Susan Penvesie).

The final paragraphs are lovely - they make me want to weep.
the patron saint of sarcasm[info]fire_and_a_rose on April 1st, 2005 02:40 am (UTC)
Thank you so much. :D

Petunia, when I thought about her, reminded me a lot of how I viewed Susan at the end of The Last Battle. I hated her, a bit, but there has to be a reason for why she is the way she is.

Oh that, was wonderful! I'm so glad [info]copperbadge promised you cupcakes and ninjas, or whatever it was.

Lovely interaction between the sisters. ^_^

the patron saint of sarcasm[info]fire_and_a_rose on April 1st, 2005 02:39 am (UTC)
Ninjas carrying cupcakes, I think. Something like that. :D

Oh, thank you.
Belle[info]nuit_belle on April 1st, 2005 02:39 am (UTC)
Oh, I'm so glad that [info]copperbadge linked to this. Wonderful! I love all the Narnia books. I love the idea the Lily sees Aslan and how she'd get sorted into Gryffindor as a result of that. And you made me sympathize with Petunia.
the patron saint of sarcasm[info]fire_and_a_rose on April 1st, 2005 04:31 am (UTC)
I'm glad you enjoyed it. :D

Petunia needs more love, really.

Next goal: Make Vernon likeable. *stares* I'm not sure how I'm going to manage that one.

Oh, WOW.

I would totally have more of a coherent review except that I'm blown away but how well you made this concept work.

WOW.
the patron saint of sarcasm[info]fire_and_a_rose on April 1st, 2005 04:31 am (UTC)
*g* Thanks. Coherency is overrated, really.

I came here via copperbadge.

I don't usually read cross-overs, but I'm so glad I decided to give it a shot this time. This piece is beautifully written, and you do a great job smoothly blending the two worlds, and the characters and their emotions are so beautiful.
the patron saint of sarcasm[info]fire_and_a_rose on April 1st, 2005 03:38 am (UTC)
Thank you very much.

I think the thing that made this capable of working was that the England Lewis wrote about is the same as Muggle England, and that's where the story is set. I didn't have to try and make Narnia and the Wizarding world fit together, and I couldn't, really.
